Cannabis Suppresses Pain in Sickle Cell Anemia

With sickle cell anemia, people experience severe pain. Scientists at the University of California conducted research to find an effective means to suppress pain. The experiment was led by Dr. D. Abrams and K. Gupta.

Research features

Scientists invited people with sickle cell anemia. They suggested that patients take marijuana provided by the National Institute on Substance Abuse. Hemp contained different proportions of THC and CBD.

As part of the experiment, patients regularly used cannabis for 5 days. The investigators took daily medical history and assessed the condition of the patients. During the experiment, scientists found that every day the patients felt better, their pain gradually dulled. The study participants found it easier to walk, sleep and daily mood improved.

Scientist K. Gupt commented on the results of the experiment:

“Intolerable pain forces patients to seek salvation in marijuana. This is the main reason why patients are desperately looking for cannabis in dispensaries. The results of the study will form the basis for finding different proportions of cannabis THC and CBD for chronic pain relief. Of course, in order to achieve the golden mean, additional research needs to be done with a wider audience of participants. In this case, we will be able to understand the nature of the positive effects of cannabis on human health.”

The experiment confirms that marijuana can adequately replace opioids, which are used to suppress acute and chronic pain. These drugs are deadly and addictive, so today they are prescribed only in extreme cases. The opioid ban effectively limited patients in their choice of drugs and left them alone with the problem.
