History of the first use of cannabis for medicinal purposes

Almost all elements of marijuana take part in the treatment of diseases. Such a tendency dates back to ancient times. The beneficial properties of the plant are mentioned even in Chinese and Indian teachings. During the excavations, archaeologists discovered the remains of a woman in which hemp particles were found. Most likely, this lady used cannabis to reduce pain during childbirth.

The first serious step in the popularization of marijuana as a medicinal product was made in 1838. Irish specialist William Brooke O'Shaughnessy in one of the scientific publications published the results of research that showed the use of an alcoholic tincture of the plant in the treatment of pain, cholera, rheumatism, cholera and rabies. 4 years later, the scientist visited India, where he sampled several types of marijuana. After carrying out experiments, the Briton established the presence of the plant's ability to fight vomiting and convulsions. After such a loud statement, cannabis became very popular in Great Britain.

Over time, rumors about its beneficial properties crossed the ocean, and as a result, in 1854, hemp became almost the main raw material for the manufacture of medicines in the United States. In 1890, John Russell Reynolds, serving as a physician at the court of Queen Victoria, made a scientific discovery, according to which the plant effectively combats migraines, asthma, clinical spasms, insomnia, and neuralgia.

In the first half of the 20th century, the attitude of the authorities of many states to marijuana changed dramatically. Doctors have noticed unusual behavior in many patients after prolonged and excessive use. Also, in those years, specialists could not properly store drugs. Already in 1928, hemp was banned in the developed countries of the world.

By the 1960s, talk about the use of cannabis in medicine had subsided. This was the case until two Israeli biochemists determined the THC content. After several additional studies, Yehiel Gaony and Raphael Meshulam painted the formula of the substance in detail. Since according to the Geneva Convention of 1925, the use of marijuana was prohibited, scientists were looking for ways to obtain THC by an artificial method. In 1985, the Americans managed to achieve this goal. Already after 11 years, in some states, the liberalization of marijuana was enshrined at the legislative level. By the way, today in 18 states you can buy cannabis for medicinal purposes, and the prescription costs pennies compared to American salaries.
