The Latvian Parliament did not allow the cultivation and use of marijuana

On June 1, Latvian activists asked parliament to issue a permit for the cultivation, storage and use of cannabis. The day before, the Sejm Commission considered this bill, and not a single member present supported the idea of the society. Before the vote, government officials listened to health experts and ordinary activists, and the initiative to legalize marijuana belongs to Aris Abele. As a result, parliamentarians announced that it is allowed to buy hemp seeds in the country, but for personal use.

With the help of the proposed bill, Aris wanted to relieve the burden on the law enforcement system, which, in his opinion, should deal with the investigation of real crimes. The activist also advises officials to pay attention to the experience of successful states where cannabis is partially or fully legalized.

Abele proposed that parliament representatives allow one Latvian to grow up to three hemp bushes and store about 300 grams of pure products. Pharmacists, unlike society, were critical of this bill. They believed that the Seimas' approval of the initiative would worsen the situation in society.

According to Alla Chudovska, who heads the Latvian Society of Pharmacists, in order to pass the law, the initiators provide false facts to the authorities and the entire population. Aris Abele's team stated that the use and possession of marijuana in neighboring Estonia is not punishable by law. Activists also provided allegedly false facts about the benefits of the plant.

The Latvian authorities are tough on cannabis, but no one can stop a citizen of this country from buying hemp seeds. After all, research results indicate the presence of many useful substances in this product. The Baltic country also practices the use of marijuana for medical purposes in extreme cases.
