Medical marijuana in Peru

Medical marijuana is legal in Peru

LIMA, Peru - Medical marijuana is legal in Peru. Peruvian President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski signed a bill to legalize medical marijuana on November 16. The bill was approved by Congress a few weeks ago and would allow cannabis to be used to treat cancer, epilepsy and Parkinson's.

The Peruvian president was delighted to sign the bill, adding that Peru has joined modern civilization and is leaving behind the stigma of cannabis. The Peruvian government is now tasked with establishing regulations for the use of marijuana throughout the country, and the Ministry of Health will be responsible for keeping records of prescribed patients. They will also keep records of commercial cannabis retailers and carriers.

Cultivation is still illegal in Peru, but the government plans to create an official list of growers and importers to allow cannabis to be supplied to Peruvians with medical marijuana prescriptions.

Ana Alvarez is an advocate for honey cannabis in Peru and told the Guardian the new law is not enough because of its limitations. “We are very pleased with the fact that Peruvian law has approved this, but we are not completely satisfied. We want associations like ours to be included in the production of this natural medicine.” Alvarez makes cannabis oil at his home for his son, who has brain tumors and suffers from a severe form of Lennox-Gastaut syndrome epilepsy. She also made medicine for 300 other patients. The new law would prevent her from continuing to make the drug her son needs, and regulated versions would cost patients significantly more.
