Traveling with medicinal cannabis

With the new law on cannabis as a medicinal product, medicinal cannabis began to be sold in Germany. Since then, it has been possible to bring it with you to other European countries.

More and more EU countries are adopting laws on the use of medicinal cannabis. However, legislation varies greatly, which means that cannabis patients who intend to travel with their medication should keep a few things in mind, as even after being approved as a drug, cannabis is not

subject to different rules than conventional drugs. All cannabinoids, whether they are a ready-to-drink product, an extract, or a flower, are prescribed and sold as so-called "commodity drugs". Because only Sativex, Marinol, Dronabinal or Canames are approved in most countries, these medications are only allowed to be taken on holiday or business trips. This requires a "certificate of carrying drugs for the purpose of medical treatment" - Article 75 of the Schengen Agreement which can be issued by each EU Member State. In addition, a patient in Germany must complete this form at the doctor's office and have it printed by the relevant health authority. In Germany, this is ensured by the relevant public health authorities, who sometimes charge a small fee for data processing. An implementation agreement was introduced to simplify the legal drug trade in the medical field within the EU and therefore allow export from the issuing country and importation to other EU countries.

This certificate gives the patient the right to medical care for 28 days. When flying, the medicine must be carried in hand luggage along with a copy of the prescription and certificate.
