Sustainable Foods, a New Zealand-based alternative protein maker, has announced plans to start making meat from cannabis. The food product will be made from their varieties of marijuana, and processed at a private hydroelectric power station.

Features of the production of hemp meat

Hemp meat is planned to be produced under the brand name The Craft Meat Co. This organization has already presented several types of plant products, including sausages, minced meat and hamburgers.

Kieran Rey, co-owner of Sustainable Foods, commented on the news:

“Many of our products have a small amount of CBD. But in the new meat product, hemp will be the main ingredient.”

In addition to cannabis, dietary fiber will be added to the meat. Their proportions will be up to 19% of the daily intake. There is no such amount of a substance in animal meat or other products based on plant components that are familiar to us.

The New Zealand-based brand has a partnership with medicinal cannabis manufacturer Greenfern Industries. The partner company has a powerful hydroelectric power station with a dam and an electric generator, which will ensure the operation of equipment for the processing of raw materials and the release of goods.

Marijuana-based meat will be sold in ecological packaging. It is produced using Forest Stewardship certified material. Representatives of the New Zealand manufacturer added:

“If the product needs to be packaged in plastic, we use products from the well-known brand Flight Plastics. It has a full production cycle in New Zealand. At the moment, we cannot replace synthetics 100%, but we are fully aware of the responsibility.”
