What are the benefits of cannabis terpenes?
It is not easy to single out just one substance that would explain such a profound therapeutic effect of cannabis on the human body. Moreover, hemp seeds and adult plants contain a whole "bouquet" of biologically active substances: terpenes and terpenoids, cannabinoids and flavonoids, phenols and acids. Their actions are intertwined, influence each other, and the overall effect is many times greater than the expected result from the separate use of certain substances.
Shake but don't mix? No matter how! The more carefully all the “ingredients” are mixed in a cannabis-based preparation, the more powerful its therapeutic potential will be! But terpenes in cannabis are also decomposed into a number of components that interact with each other ... It is them that an initiative group from the Italian University of Modena and Reggio Emilia is studying. So, what are terpenes rich in, and how can they affect our health?
Terpenes as a therapeutic agent
Hemp has a powerful disinfectant and antifungal effect due to terpenes such as alpha-pinene, beta-pinene, beta-caryophyllene and beta-myrcene. The experiments of scientists from Italy clearly showed that terpenes in the composition of cosmetics, medicines, dietary supplements and food products destroy pathogenic microorganisms. So, inflorescences and leaves of marijuana disinfect products, even if you just add them to the brine in a minimal amount during conservation!
By the way, hemp terpenes proved to be useful even in a direct collision with gram-positive bacteria - and it is quite difficult to deal with them, both with the help of disinfection methods familiar to us, and with the involvement of antibiotics! Staphylococcus aureus, listeria, a number of infectious diseases - in each of these cases, the effect of the use of terpenes will be significant.
We can only closely follow the findings of Italian scientists and hope that the modern food industry, cosmetology and pharmacology will be able to use the medical potential of terpenes to the maximum benefit for our health.
